Wanslea Launches New Case Management Service for Grandcarers
Coinciding with Global Kinship Carers Week, Wanslea is proud to announce the launch of a new Case Management Service for Grandcarers, made possible through $2.5 million in funding from the Stan Perron Charitable Foundation.
The new three-year service will complement the existing Wanslea Grandcare program and is designed to provide guidance, advocacy, and practical support on a one-on-one basis for those grandparent carers facing complex challenges relating to their role of providing full time care for their grandchildren.
The new Case Management service will support grandcarers for up to six months who may be experiencing housing stress, need assistance to access critical ID for their grandchildren, or support with navigating disability, health, education and financial support systems. The provision of parenting advice, support with family conflict matters, education regarding parenting and child development, assistance to access to counselling and legal services are all key components of the expanded service offering.
“Year on year, our small but mighty Grandcare team has seen a 15% increase in the number of grandparent carers coming forward. As of March this year, over 2,500 grandcarers were registered, caring for more than 3,700 children,” said Jo Sadler, CEO of Wanslea. “While existing supports are valuable, many grandparent carers face enormous strain when taking on full-time care. This new Case Management Service has been a key pillar of our advocacy campaign and has been co-designed with grandcarers to ensure we are able to help them with complex challenges they face.”
The service based in Perth and provide outreach to every region across WA to raise awareness of available supports. Over the next few years, we will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the program to assess the outcomes achieved for grandparent carers and the children in their care.
