Children Of Parents with Mental Illness (COPMI)

Support for children and young people up to 18 years who have a parent with mental illness

Up to one in five children live in families with a parent who has a mental health problem which can put them at a greater risk of developing mental health issues themselves.

COPMI provides support for children and young people in these situations. It is a child-focused, family centred and strengths-based program that aims to improve mental health outcomes for vulnerable children and young people.

Through the COPMI program, we help children and young people develop a Family Action Plan. We support them in setting personal goals, building upon their existing strengths and motivations, and devising new strategies to manage challenges and reduce their vulnerabilities. This work will be done in partnership with a parent, guardian or significant supportive adult in a safe and secure environment.

Building strategies for resilience

COPMI improves mental health in children/young people by:

  • Increasing their sense of connection, safety and support
  • Building protective factors to reduce the risk of mental health challenges
  • Increasing their sense of belief in themselves and their capacity
  • Increasing their families’ understanding of mental health and the impact of mental health challenges
  • Enhancing their parents’ abilities to understand and respond to the overall well-being of their children

Who can apply for COPMI?

COPMI is available to residents located the Perth metropolitan and Mandurah regions who are aged between 5 and 18 who have one or more parents with a mental health issue that is being case managed. Participation in COPMI is voluntary, and both the child and their parent or guardian must be willing to work in partnership with Wanslea.

Testimonials
“I really felt like they cared about me. At times I would get really bad but she (Beth) would be there for me and take me to the hospital when my parents wouldn’t. I could tell she genuinely cared and I feel like if it wasn’t for you guys I would still be the same as last year…it’s just the fact that they were interested in my life and wanted to help me. I’m really grateful. I think they (one on one and group sessions) both helped, but I got tired of talking about my feelings, so I tried the group. I feel more comfortable around people that are going through similar stuff and I think it’s pretty cool."

“(Alix) said I can talk to her freely if I wanted to. When I talk about stuff I get scared for them [the workers] and I don’t want them to do stuff, but when she (Alix) talks to me she says I’d rather you talk about this stuff that’s on your mind, I was really surprised when she said that.”

What COPMI participants said about the program“Wanslea has been really good, been there for me when I needed a backbone, something to give me a little breathing room in whatever situation I found a bit too stressful or situation I wouldn’t have been able to get through otherwise. (Both one-on-one and group sessions) helped me, getting a break, just talking to someone, doing things, having activities to do, having a chance to go out, having social relationships, self-discovery, it really helped me through a difficult time. The (sessions) are really good and they always adapt to whatever I need in whatever form or way”.
